How to use your camera as a mirror
Open it, get the light in front of you, and freeze when your hands are busy.
Open the mirror
One button, one prompt, and the reflection fills the frame. It starts mirrored because that is what glass does and what you are used to: lean left and the reflection leans left with you. The camera light stays on for as long as the mirror is open and goes out when you press Close.
Fill the screen, then move the light
Fill the screen hands the whole display over to the reflection with an Exit control drawn on top of it. Then fix the lighting rather than the camera: a lamp or a window in front of you is worth more than any setting, because the exposure meter follows the brightest thing in the frame and a window behind your shoulder turns you into a silhouette.
Freeze when you need both hands
Press Freeze and the picture stops on the frame that was showing, so you can turn round, look at the back of your head and come back to it. The camera keeps running underneath, so Unfreeze picks the live view straight back up. Save writes exactly what is on screen, flip included, as a PNG.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I look wrong the moment I turn the flip off?
Because you have spent your whole life looking at the mirrored version of your own face and almost never at the other one. Nobody's face is symmetrical — one eyebrow sits higher, the nose leans, the parting falls on one side — and the unflipped view swaps all of it at once. It looks wrong to you and completely normal to everyone else, because the unflipped one is the only version they have ever seen.
Is what I see here what people see on a call?
Not while the flip is on. Meeting apps mirror your own tile for you and send the unmirrored picture to everybody else, which is exactly why the writing on your mug reads backwards in your own preview and correctly in theirs. Press the flip and you are looking at the version that goes out — a useful thing to do before you hold a book or a badge up to the lens.
Can I use this as a mirror in a dark room?
No: a camera has nothing to work with unless light is falling on you, and turning gain up in the dark buys grain rather than detail. The cheapest fix within reach is a second screen — a phone or a laptop showing a full white page throws a soft, even light that is much kinder than a ceiling bulb directly overhead.
Does freezing a frame turn the camera off?
No, and the light beside the lens tells you so: the track is still live behind the still picture, which is what makes Unfreeze instant. Close is the only control that ends the stream. Leaving a mirror frozen is not a way to stop being on camera, it is only a way to stop the picture moving.
Where does the saved photo go?
Into your browser's downloads folder, as a PNG named with the date and time it was taken. It is written the same way any other download is, at whatever pixel size the camera is currently running, so a 1080p camera gives you a 1920×1080 file rather than a scaled copy of what fits on screen.
Can I use the back camera on a phone?
Yes, when the phone exposes more than one video input: Switch camera steps through them in turn. Bear in mind the rear camera is not a mirror in any sense — it is sharper and wider, but it is pointing away from you, so turn the flip off before you use it to look at something rather than at yourself.
About mirroring, and why your self-view lies to you
Video software has mirrored your own picture back at you since the first consumer video chat, and the reason is ergonomic rather than aesthetic: when you correct your position by watching yourself, an unmirrored view sends you the wrong way, and you end up chasing the frame instead of centering in it. The picture leaving your machine was never mirrored, which is the whole explanation for the oldest complaint in video calling — writing on a T-shirt, a name badge or a whiteboard reads backwards in your own tile and perfectly to everyone else. Here the flip is a control rather than a buried setting, precisely so you can look at both versions before you decide anything.
The other half of looking presentable has nothing to do with software. A laptop camera module is built around a sensor of roughly a sixth of an inch behind a fixed-focus lens, a fraction of the light-collecting area of the phone in your pocket, and its only real lever is how much light reaches it. Put the brightest thing in the room in front of you rather than behind: the exposure meter follows the window, so a window at your back leaves your face several stops under. If there is nothing to aim at you, a second screen works surprisingly well — a phone propped up showing the full white screen gives a soft, even fill that a ceiling bulb overhead never will.
This page deliberately measures nothing. There are no readouts to interpret, because somebody straightening a collar ninety seconds before a call does not want a table of track settings. If the picture never appears, or appears and looks wrong in a way that light will not fix, that is a different question and the webcam test answers it with the numbers. If what you are really checking is a whole call setup rather than your hair, the video call test takes the camera, the microphone, the speakers and the line in one pass.
What this mirror does with the reflection
Every number on this page is worked out by JavaScript running in the tab you are reading it in. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, logged or kept, which is also why the tools carry on working after you disconnect from the network.
The camera track feeds the video element directly, and the only copy this page ever makes is the one you ask for by pressing Freeze or Save. That copy lives in a canvas in this tab, is thrown away when you reload, and only becomes a file when you press Save — at which point your browser writes it to your own downloads folder.
