A self-paced score and a limited-hold score are not the same measurement and should never be compared with each other — the first is mostly a decision about how long to look, the second removes that decision entirely. Touch works the same as a mouse here, though on a phone the cells are around 44 px and a mistimed thumb costs a strike rather than a numeral.

How to run the chimp test properly

One decision, one click and one line to read. The decision is the one that changes the score.

  1. Pick the exposure before you deal

    Self-paced is the version every other site ships: the numerals sit there until you click the 1, so you decide how long to study them and the page times that decision. The three timed buttons cover the layout after 210, 430 or 650 ms whatever you do. Choose before dealing rather than after, because switching resets the run — the two are not the same measurement and a mixed run would report a number that means nothing.

  2. Click the 1 — it is the shutter, not a warm-up

    In self-paced mode every remaining numeral goes behind a block the instant the 1 is touched, so the layout you take into the round is the one you had memorized a moment before, not the one you are still reading. Nothing deals itself here and no round starts on a timer you did not ask for, which matters most in the 210 ms mode: the numerals appear on the frame after your click, so being mid-blink is your own doing.

  3. Read the strike line rather than the round number

    The round number only says how many numerals were dealt; the strikes say how the run is actually going. A strike ends the round on the spot, reveals the numerals you had left and deals the same count again, so a run can sit at eight numerals for three attempts and end there. Rounds voided by a tab switch are counted separately and cost nothing, because a hold that was never served is not a round you failed.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chimpanzee really beat me at this?

At the timed version, one particular chimpanzee beat a group of university students, and that is a narrower claim than the internet made of it. Ayumu, then about five years old, was tested at the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University and held roughly 80% accuracy whether the numerals were covered after 650 ms or after 210 ms, while the student group fell from around 80% to about 40% over the same range. At the self-paced version — the one you are most likely to be playing — there was no comparable gap, because a human who can look as long as they like will look as long as they need.

Why is the 210 ms mode so much harder than the self-paced one?

Because it removes the part you were actually good at. Self-paced play lets you rehearse the layout in chunks, check yourself, and only then commit by touching the 1 — the page shows your median study time so you can see how much of your score that was buying. At 210 ms nothing can be rehearsed, since the whole display is gone in about a third of the time it takes to move your eyes twice, so the round is decided by one glance. That is a measure of how much you can take in at once rather than how well you can hold it.

How many numerals should I be able to clear?

Nine self-paced is a solid result and most people stall between seven and eleven. The reason nine keeps coming up is that the original task used the numerals 1 to 9, so the ceiling was built into the apparatus rather than into the people. In the 210 ms mode expect the figure to fall by three or four numerals, and expect the fall to be steepest at exactly the count where you had been comfortable — the point at which one look stops being enough is quite sharp.

Does clicking quickly help my score?

No, there is no clock running once the blocks are down. The page times how long you take from the mask to the last numeral and reports the median, but nothing in the scoring uses it; the only limits on the round are the order and the three strikes. Speed matters in one indirect way — a layout is easier to hold for four seconds than for forty — but hurrying your clicks buys accuracy problems rather than points.

Why does one wrong click end the whole round?

Because letting you guess again would turn twenty cells into a coin-flip exercise. With eight numerals hidden among 42 cells, a policy of guess-and-retry clears most rounds eventually and the count you reach would then describe your patience. Ending on the first wrong numeral keeps a cleared round meaning what it appears to mean: that the sequence was reproduced from memory in one pass. The three strikes are what give you room for a genuine slip.

Do the numerals land in the same places twice?

No — every round draws a fresh set of cells at random and assigns the numerals to them in a fresh order. This is deliberate rather than incidental: a fixed or repeating layout is learnable, and a few rounds in you would be recalling a position from the previous attempt instead of encoding this one. It also means two rounds at the same count can differ in difficulty, since numerals bunched in one corner are considerably easier than numerals spread to the edges.

The page says my 210 ms hold was really 219 ms. Why?

Because a browser can only change the screen on a frame boundary. The blocks are drawn on the first animation frame at or after the target, and frames arrive every 16.7 ms on a 60 Hz display, so a 210 ms request is served as anything from 210 to about 227 ms; at 144 Hz the overshoot shrinks to under 7 ms. Reporting the hold you were actually given rather than the one you asked for is the honest version, and it is also why a result from a 60 Hz laptop is very slightly easier than the same setting on a fast monitor.

About Ayumu, and what the 2007 study actually showed

The test is named after a short report by Sana Inoue and Tetsuro Matsuzawa in Current Biology in 2007, which compared three young chimpanzees at Kyoto University’s Primate Research Institute with a group of university students on two separate tasks. The first is the one the web copied: numerals appear on a touch screen and are replaced by white squares as soon as the subject touches the lowest one, so the subject sets their own study time. The second, and the one the headlines came from, is a limited-hold task — five numerals shown for a fixed 650, 430 or 210 ms and then masked regardless of what anyone does. Ayumu, the youngest chimpanzee, stayed near 80% correct across all three durations. The students started level with him and collapsed to roughly 40% at 210 ms. Almost every chimp test online ships only the first task, which is why the comparison people arrive wanting to make has never actually been on offer to them.

What that result is evidence for is narrower than the way it travels. Ayumu had worked with Arabic numerals on that apparatus since infancy and the human comparison group had not, and the obvious objection was tested directly: Silberberg and Kearns in 2009 gave a human sustained practice on the same task and watched the gap close, and Cook and Wilson published the parallel argument in 2010. The defensible reading is not that chimpanzees have better working memory than people — it is that a briefly flashed spatial array of numerals is encoded very fast by a well-practiced subject, and that most humans meeting the task for the first time are not one. The popular gloss about photographic memory has no support in the paper at all. One departure worth stating here: the published limited-hold task used five numerals, so only the five-numeral round of the timed mode on this page is a like-for-like comparison, and the higher counts are an extrapolation of your own.

All of which makes a self-paced score a strange thing to boast about, since most of it is a decision about how long to look rather than a property of your memory — the median study time printed under the field is there to make that visible, and a run where it sits near ten seconds is a different achievement from one where it sits near two. If you want the same underlying question with the sequence taken out of it, the visual memory test flashes a pattern and accepts the tiles in any order, and the number memory test moves the whole thing from space into speech. And since a timed round comes down to one look followed by a burst of accurate clicking, two of the pure input measurements sit next to it usefully: the aim trainer measures how long you take to put the cursor on a target you can see, and the click speed test measures how fast the clicks themselves can come.
